On Stage - Am Bühnenrand - A Film Performance Installation by Alf:a Banze & Kopi Kaputa

Während eines Auftritts in einer Off-Galerie erleidet der Berliner Künstler Alf:a Banze einen Stromschlag und fällt in einen traumartigen Dämmerzustand. Es beginnt eine Reise durch einen Zwischenraum aus Alchemie, Religion, Mythologie, Popkultur und Alltagswelt.

Mittelalterliche Texte, Bibelstellen, Traumprotokolle, Computerspiele, urbane Landschaften sowie Bilder von Krieg und Katastrophen treten in unerwartete Beziehungen zueinander. Sie überlagern, widersprechen und kommentieren sich gegenseitig.

Dazwischen erscheint der Künstler immer wieder in alltäglichen Situationen: beim Zeichnen, beim Aufwachen, in der Küche. Doch auch diese scheinbar dokumentarischen Momente gehören derselben Bildwelt an. Nur mit einem dünnen Tuch bekleidet bewegt sich der Künstler durch einen Kosmos aus Traumlogik, Mythologie und Medienbildern.

Alf:a ist ein Vagabund, ein Narr. Er hält keine Vorlesungen über Machtstrukturen, sondern zeigt auf Merkwürdiges und geht weiter.

Die Installation besteht aus einer begehbaren Bühne mit Mikrofonstativen, Verstärkern und Kabeln. Dahinter hängt eine Projektionsfläche aus weißen Toilettenpapierstreifen. Die Videobilder erscheinen auf ihr wie auf einer durchlässigen Membran. Durchschreitet man die Leinwand, gelangt man in einen zweiten, dunklen Raum mit einem Publikum aus schwarz-weiß bemalten Pappfiguren. Einige Plätze sind noch frei. Während die Projektion im vorderen Raum spiegelverkehrt erscheint, kann sie von hier aus mit lesbaren Zwischentiteln betrachtet werden.

Die Installation wird als etwa 30-minütiger Film-Loop präsentiert. Zu besonderen Anlässen treten die Musikerinnen und Musiker von KOPI KAPUTA live auf. Hinter der Leinwand erscheinen sie dabei nur als Schatten und Silhouetten.

Die Erzählung endet, wie sie begonnen hat. Der Künstler erwacht auf derselben Bühne, nur einen Augenblick später. „Alles ok?“, fragen die Musiker. „Ja, alles ok ...“

ON STAGE – AM BÜHNENRAND wurde mithilfe von ChatGPT realisiert, nicht um Wahrheiten zu erzeugen, sondern als Werkzeug zur Untersuchung von Bildproduktion, Wiederholung und Stereotypisierung. Künstliche Intelligenz ist kein neutrales Werkzeug. Sie erzeugt ihre Bilder aus Archiven der Vergangenheit und reproduziert dabei bestehende Muster und Klischees. Die Sehnsucht nach einer vermeintlich besseren Vergangenheit und die massenhafte Verbreitung vereinfachender Bilder sind zentrale Bestandteile populistischer Erzählungen.

During a performance at an off-gallery, Berlin-based artist Alf:a Banze receives an electric shock and falls into a dreamlike twilight state. A journey begins through a liminal space between alchemy, religion, mythology, pop culture, and everyday life.

Medieval texts, biblical passages, dream logs, computer games, urban landscapes, and images of war and disaster enter into unexpected relationships with one another. They overlap, contradict, and comment on each other.

Interspersed throughout are scenes in everyday situations: drawing, waking up, in the kitchen. Yet even these seemingly documentary moments belong to the same visual world. Clad only in a thin cloth, the artist moves through a cosmos of dream logic, mythology, and media images.

Alf:a is a vagabond, a fool. He doesn't lecture on power structures but points out the strange and moves on.

The installation consists of a walk-in stage with microphone stands, amplifiers, and cables. Behind it hangs a projection surface made of white toilet paper strips. The video images appear on it as if on a permeable membrane. Passing through the screen, one enters a second, dark room with an audience of black-and-white painted cardboard figures. A few seats are still empty. While the projection appears reversed in the front room, it can be viewed from here with legible intertitles.

The installation is presented as an approximately 30-minute film loop. On special occasions, the musicians of KOPI KAPUTA perform live. Behind the screen, they appear only as shadows and silhouettes.

The narrative ends as it began. The artist awakens on the same stage, just a moment later. "Everything OK?" the musicians ask. "Yes, everything OK..."

ON STAGE – AT THE EDGE OF THE STAGE was created using ChatGPT, not to generate truths, but as a tool for investigating image production, repetition, and stereotyping. Artificial intelligence is not a neutral tool. She creates her images from archives of the past, reproducing existing patterns and clichés. The longing for a supposedly better past and the mass dissemination of simplistic images are central components of populist narratives.
