THE BANYAN TREE

During January of 2010 the Cook Islands National Museum hosts the Banyan Project, a major international exhibition featuring 50 artists from 20 countries including the Cook Islands. The show comprises of paintings, sculptures, videos, photographs and installations.

Exhibition Curator Alfred Banze who first visited the Cook Islands in 1993 is pleased to welcome the audience to a “journey around the world.” After Bangkok, Phnom Penh, Berlin and Papeete, Rarotonga is the 5fth station to feature the world wide touring exhibition. Representing the Cook Islands are local artists Mereana Hutchinson and Mahiriki Tangaroa.

Les deux artistes allemands Christine Falk et Alfred Banze présentent leur projet d’échanges culturels THE BANYAN TREE au centre des Métiers d’Art et au Musée Gauguin. L’exposition au Musée Gauguin montre des sculptures créées par cinq artistes sélectionnés en d’Asie du Sud-est. Alfred Banze présente également ses travaux autour du Banyan, des dessins sous forme de journal et son installation média «Studio». Christine Falk a apporté certains de ses tableaux, des impressions du Tibet, des paysages urbains de Berlin et également quatre peintures de Bouddha.

In our latitudes he is known as “Ficus” in the flowerpot, everywhere in the tropics, he is revered, loved and feared: The Banyan Tree. The Berlin based media artist Alfred Banze has gathered artworks from 25 countries, for a global experiment in art and cultural practice. The exhibition at Galerie im Körnerpark in Berlin shows both, the artworks and their interpretations – Remixes – by children and young people from around the world. In Berlin-Neukoelln 15 involved artists come together to do workshops, performances and presentations.

In unseren Breitengraden kennt man ihn als Ficus im Blumentopf, überall in den Tropen wird er verehrt, geliebt und auch gefürchtet. Zum Banyanbaum hat der Berliner Medienkünstler Alfred Banze Kunstwerke aus 25 Ländern zusammengetragen für ein globales Experiment der Kunst und Kulturpraxis. Die Ausstellung zeigt beides, die Kunstwerke und deren Interpretationen – Remixes – von Kindern, Jugendlichen und jungen Erwachsenenen aus aller Welt. In Neukölln treffen sich beteiligte Künstler zu Workshops, Performances und Präsentationen.

Part II of the Touring Exhibition, Metahouse Phnom Penh, Cambodia
March 10th to 22th 2009

Metahouse, a cultural center for Art and Films, run by the German filmmaker Nicolas Mesterharm, is mutch smaller than the National Museum in Bangkok. So, we focused on that artworks, which have been used in the workshops here two years ago. And we selected some other works, which fit to this place and the country. At Wat Opot, a center for HIV infected children and orphans in Takeo, we made a new workshop. We made a movie together.
